‘Power shortage down to 163MW’
ISLAMABAD: The gap between demand and supply of power in the country is now ‘negligible’ due to a recent increase in hydel and thermal generation.
This was observed in a meeting held here on Wednesday to review the power situation with Minister for Water and Power Liaquat Ali Jatoi in the chair. The WAPDA power member and other senior ministry officials attended the meeting.
The meeting noted that hydel generation has increased from 5,000MW to 5,600MW and thermal from 2,600MW to 2,800 MW. There was surplus power generation during the last two days and today there is a negligible shortfall of 163MW, the meeting observed.
Reviewing the power situation in Karachi, the meeting was told that WAPDA was providing up to 800MW of power to KESC in peak hours. There is no load shedding occurring in Karachi due to power generation from its 180MW Bin Qasim plant. The load shedding in Karachi is only due to the problems in the distribution system, repairs and overloading, the meeting noted.
It observed that the situation was likely to improve in the coming week due to a expected increase in hydel generation and that effective measures were being taken to make the plants operational round the clock to generate maximum power.
Jatoi stressed the need for adequate fuel supply and preventive maintenance measures at thermal plants. He said the power situation in Karachi was also being monitored strictly and hoped that its other units would soon be operational. app
